Notes / caveats:

  • For certain “divisible load overweight” permits, the fee may depend on the load/axle configuration and is not always fixed.

  • Some permit types (e.g. “Sealed Shipping Container”) have significantly higher monthly or annual rates compared to base monthly-permit types.

Payment Methods & Application Process (NYSDOT)

  • Applications — including for standard OS/OW and divisible-load permits — are submitted through the  https://www.newyorktruckingonline.com/

  • There is fee to establish an account , per truck is $115:

  • Payment can be made by credit card (American Express, Visa, MasterCard, Discover) — especially for “divisible load” overweight permits.

  • After payment and submission, the application is processed by NYSDOT’s Central Permit Office. For simple cases (non-complex loads), processing tends to be relatively straightforward.

  • For heavy, oversize, or special-route loads, additional requirements may apply (e.g. route review, load details) which could affect processing time and cost.

Payment & Permit Fees in New York City (NYC DOT)

If you’re transporting oversize/over-dimensional loads within New York City, the rules differ. For permits issued by NYC DOT:

  • For vehicles exceeding NYC’s standard legal size/weight limits, a Daily Over-Dimensional Vehicle Permit is required.

  • Payment for these permits must be made by certified bank check or money order only (not credit card) when dealing with NYC DOT.

  • If you need the permit quickly (overnight), there’s an additional overnight-payment fee of US$ 135.

  • Also note: typically you need 48 hours lead time from when NYC DOT receives your application + payment before the permit is issued.

  • For many moves entering/leaving the city, you may need separate permits (e.g. one for entering the city, one for exiting).

What to Watch Out For / Best Practices

  • Always verify which authority has jurisdiction over the roads/route (state vs local vs city). Using a state permit when a city permit is required (or vice versa) can lead to legal issues.

  • Using third-party permit services may add extra service fees beyond NYSDOT’s base permit fees.

  • For oversize / superload / heavy weight / sealed-container / special-vehicle permits — particularly if complex or unusual — expect extra scrutiny, potential route restrictions, and possibly longer approval times.

  • For city-level (NYC) permits, plan ahead — 48 hours minimum lead time needed, and payment must be by check/money order (not card).
