You need a Temporary HUT Permit if:

  1. You operate a commercial vehicle with a gross weight of 18,000 lbs or more, and

  2. You are not registered for the New York Highway Use Tax (no HUT account), and

  3. You will operate on New York public highways (not including toll roads like the NYS Thruway), and

  4. The vehicle is making a one-time or occasional trip into or through New York

 

Vehicle Types That Require HUT (and Therefore a Trip Permit if Not Registered)

  • Trucks

  • Tractors

  • Buses

  • Any combination over 18,000 lbs
