New York Oversize Permit Requirements For Heavy Haul Trucks

May 13, 2026, 8:27 p.m.
Heavy haul trucks operating in New York must obtain oversize or overweight permits whenever their vehicle, load, or combination exceeds the state’s legal size and weight limits. These permits are issued primarily through the New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT) and, in New York City, through NYC DOT.

When Is A New York Oversize Permit Required?

A permit is generally required if a truck or load exceeds any of these legal dimensions:

  • Width over 8’6”
  • Height over 13’6”
  • Gross vehicle weight over 80,000 lbs
  • Trailer or combination length exceeding legal limits
  • Axle weights above New York bridge formula allowances

In New York City, additional restrictions apply, including tighter overall length limitations and designated truck routes.
